How to Check Your Tyre Tread Depth: A Complete Guide

Tyre Maintenance Guide

Your tyres are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road. Maintaining adequate tread depth is crucial for your safety, especially in wet conditions. Here's everything you need to know about checking your tyre tread.

Why Tread Depth Matters

Tyre tread is designed to channel water away from the contact patch, providing grip in wet conditions. As your tyres wear, this ability diminishes, increasing the risk of aquaplaning and extending braking distances.

In Australia, the legal minimum tread depth is 1.5mm across the width of the tread. However, most experts recommend replacing tyres when they reach 3mm for optimal safety.

The 20 Cent Coin Test

One of the easiest ways to check your tread depth is using a 20 cent coin:

  1. Insert the coin into the main tread groove with the platypus facing down
  2. If the tread reaches the platypus's bill, you have approximately 3mm of tread remaining
  3. If you can see the platypus's head, your tyres need replacing soon

Tread Wear Indicators

All modern tyres have built-in tread wear indicators (TWI). These are small raised bars located in the grooves of your tyres. When the tread surface is level with these indicators, your tyres have reached the legal minimum and must be replaced.

Pro Tip

Check your tread depth at multiple points across the tyre. Uneven wear can indicate alignment or suspension issues that should be addressed.

Signs You Need New Tyres

  • Tread depth below 3mm
  • Visible tread wear indicators
  • Cracks or bulges in the sidewall
  • Uneven wear patterns
  • Tyres older than 5-6 years
